She’s up in the attic, in her room. She’s got a colouring book page from Voltron. She found a picture of Coran who looks like her stepfather and she’s colouring it in with bloodshot eyes. She’s coloured in tears of blood and lighting bolts attacking his head. Looking away from her picture, up at all of us, she says, “It’s [him] in Armageddon. I know he’s bad and he does too because he stops and looks around when he hears a noise.” She has a small cup of flour and water (that her Mom taught her to make when they put wallpaper up in her room). Carefully, she covers the back of the colouring book page and sticks it to the rosebud flower print wallpaper on the wall and says, “I’m not the one that’s bad”. She’s very clear. She’ll only tell us her story of now if we go out to the woods - her woods. “You can’t see the house from there and no one can hear us.” She knows something is wrong with her life but she’s not certain that the same thing isn’t happening to everyone. Her best friend’s stepfather is mean to all the kids whenever she goes over there - What else does he do? It turns out that he was just a violent asshole and her stepfather never took it a step further with her best friend. But she always assumed it was the way things go. Lots kept her from saying things when a councilor sat down next to her at the lunch table and said, “Hi Holly, my name is _____. You would tell me if someone was touching you in a way that made you feel bad, right?” She she was mortified. Her friends were right next to her. What would He do if she told on her stepfather? That’s “disobeying and punishable”. He said he’d make her Mom put her in an orphanage if she ever told. He said that, if she disobeyed him, when Armageddon came, even if she was holding onto her Mom that her body would be ripped from her arms and sucked down into the lake of eternal fire. He said,”You are my favourite...more than your Mom” and then he’d beat her. A silver lining just poked through the darkness. After 7 years of living with him she’s found out some good news. She meticulously shares her Medicine with us all, in secret.
