Charges were being brought against my ex-stepfather. A court case was looming and for days before my deposition my dreams became increasingly unbearable. Reliving everything all over again. Sleep wasn’t happening. We’d be given a court date. The dreams would come. We’d show up to court and w/in 5 minutes we’d find out his side
filed for an extension. This would repeat for the next 5 years. I wanted to be anywhere but here. I decided to stop putting my life on hold for a “date that would never happen” and moved 3000 miles
away from NH to CA. When a new court date would come up, I’d fly back only to find out his side filed yet again, one more extension for a few months later. The court case lasted from ages 16 - 21. I started my
relationship with HERoin at 16 and by 19 I never missed a day. One day the court was scheduled and it DID actually happen. In 30 mins the jury decided to give him life in prison. Wasn’t everything better now? Done? A few months after the case ended, Ancestor Spirit took me aside and said,”You haven’t written a song in years. This no longer suits your needs.You can stay on this path and you can die, like all of your friends. Or you can start a new story. Either way, it’s ok. Just know that you are
at a crossroads - right NOW”. I drove back across the country. Stayed with a friend in NH and didn’t sleep for 19 days. I refused aspirin or anything that would take the pain of life seeping back into my nerves away. You know when your leg falls a-sleep? That was how my whole body felt for 2 weeks - nonstop. I wanted to remember this pain. I wanted a big messy break up. At 21 I quit junk and chose music. The narrator of this song is describing all of this over a long visit. We honour her.
